If you are planning a new build or home addition, you may wish to have an architect on board who can draw up the plans. Architects help you visualize your project and have the expertise necessary to design and lay out the new rooms. They can be involved in the initial stages of a project all the way through to the end, depending on the scope of the job.

Architects charge for their labor in several ways. Some charge a flat fee, while others charge by the hour. However, it is most common for the labor fee of an architect to come in as a percentage of the total project budget, between 10% and 17%. These costs can change, however, depending on how many drawings or variations there are in the plans.
