1. Add Greenery

Integrating nature into homes is the biggest design trend in 2025, according to 60% of experts. Lior Kahana, Operations Manager at 123 Remodeling, suggests adding natural greenery with hardy plants like ferns and aloe vera. Whether you’re looking for small bathroom remodel ideas or have a larger space to work with, your bathroom is a unique environment suitable to a variety of indoor plants. There are plants fit for all budgets and styles with many low maintenance options available to reduce the time you need to care for the plants and increase the time enjoying them.

Cost:  Plants can cost from $5 to $500 depending on the species, size, and season in which you’re purchasing.

2. Install a Freestanding Bathtub

Freestanding bathtubs are one of the top design trends of 2025. They offer more flexibility in design when remodeling a bathroom because they can be placed nearly anywhere within the room and can often make the room appear bigger than it is. Justin Cornforth, plumber and Owner of Ace Home Co, says that “contemporary freestanding bathtubs with floor-mounted fillers are a popular option for a luxury spa vibe” and thinks they will “still be popular and desired.” Freestanding bathtubs range in styles from a traditional clawfoot design to a more modern design in the shape of your choosing. In addition to creating a serene spa-like feel, installing a bathtub in your home where one may not currently exist could be beneficial in the future, as Dimitris Nacopoulos, Sr. Director of Operations at Leaf Home Bath, a Leaf Home company, advises that “From a resale perspective, it’s best to have at least one bathtub in the home.”

Cost:  The average cost to install a freestanding bathtub is $1,200 to $10,000 but can increase depending on the materials selected as well as any new plumbing work or structural reinforcement that may be required.

3. Mix Metals

For a curated and more thoughtful look, experts encourage bathroom remodels to include mixed metals in their design plans. There are no hard and fast rules to mixing metals but there are some guidelines that can help. A good rule of thumb to follow when mixing finishes is to pair warm and cool undertones. In addition to warm and cool tones, mixing high and low shine options helps the finishes stand out rather than compete. Finally, adding a single element that combines two finishes in one piece can help tie the finishes together and balance the overall design.

Cost: Costs will vary widely depending on the metals selected. A similarly designed polished chrome faucet will be in the $160 range; whereas, the polished nickel is at the higher end in the $280 range.

4. Refresh Cabinet and Vanity Hardware

If you are planning to list your home on the market or are simply looking for non-invasive and lower-cost options to spruce up your bathroom, a cabinet and vanity hardware refresh may be all you need. Replacing your hardware is simple enough for many to do on their own and can instantly transform a dated look into a modern one. Matte black remains a dominant trend in cabinet hardware, while gold, in both polished and brushed finishes, is making a comeback. For homeowners looking to pull texture into the room without breaking the bank, sculptural and geometric hardware that makes a statement may be the way to go.

Cost: Costs can vary depending on the quality and metal choice; however, if you’re looking to stick to the budget, a new set of knurled cabinet pulls in black and gold can be found for around $12.

5. Add Floor Heating

Demand for underfloor heating systems has increased in recent years thanks to advancements in technology and installation practices. The comfort they provide and their ability to integrate with modern smart home systems has made them a top trend for 2025. Floor heating is energy efficient, can help improve air quality, is virtually maintenance-free, and operates quietly. All of these benefits will contribute to the spa-like luxurious feel that is trending for bathrooms this year.

Cost:  The total cost for installing radiating floor heating is between $6 and $25 per sq.ft.

6. Upgrade to a Vanity Made From Organic Materials

Experts suggest that many homeowners will be looking to include organic materials in their bathroom remodels this year. These elements can add warmth and texture to the space. Elisa Hall, Lead Designer at Awning.com, advises that “Alternatives in bamboo, cork, or reclaimed wood satisfy the demand for environmentally friendly alternatives while maintaining a polished look.” If your tastes trend more towards nature, Kahana adds that “There’s a move towards bathrooms inspired more by nature. Stone basins and wood vanities are popular, with natural materials and woven textures softening the traditional bathroom feel."

Cost: On average, a 60-inch cabinet installed will cost between $1,200 - $1,390

7. Opt for Modern Floating Fixtures

Modern bathroom ideas include installing floating fixtures, also known as wall-hung fixtures. Floating fixtures create a sleek and minimalist look along with an illusion of more space, and they help make cleaning a breeze. There is a wide variety of designs available, and can be a great way to incorporate curves, a top interior design feature of 2025, into your bathroom. To maintain a cohesive look, it is recommended that all fixtures be floating; however, it is ultimately up to personal preference.

Cost:  A 60-inch installed wall-hung vanity will range between $1,310 and $1,390; a wall-hung toilet between $500 and $2,500, and a wall-mounted sink between $400 and $1,600.

8. Add Built-in Shelves for More Storage

Built-in shelves are permanent shelves that can create a seamless and inviting look in any room of the house. When added to the bathroom, they result in a dedicated place to help organize and display items like bath oils, soaps, or fluffy towels in a stylish and aesthetically pleasing way. Aside from providing a spa-like feel, they offer the practicality of housing personal items or decor so your bathroom can maintain a clean and uncluttered look.

Cost: The average homeowner spends around $2,700 for solid wood shelving; however, it is important to note that shelving be in the wood and finish suitable for a bathroom environment.

9. Repaint Cabinets and Vanity in a Soothing Color

In addition to upgrading your vanity hardware, other easy and low-cost ideas for a bathroom remodel are to repaint the cabinets and the vanity in soothing colors. Interior design professionals agree color is a main contributor to creating a relaxing space. Soft whites and warm neutrals are often a great choice to help add a level of sereneness to the room. For those who might prefer some color variety, a lighter shade of blue to mimic calming waters or shades of green to incorporate a botanical feel may be a good choice.

Cost:  The cost to paint bathroom cabinets will be between $6 and $12 per square foot.  This results in an average of $125 to $250 for 20 sq.ft. of cabinets and $150 to $250 for a standard vanity measuring 48 inches.

10. Make a Statement With Lighting

Lighting can make a statement in any room; however, if you’re looking for half-bathroom remodel ideas, this is a great place to start. With limited space, using layered lighting can create depth and dimension, making the space appear larger. Installing an eye-catching statement light fixture will act as the focal point of the room. By drawing the eyes upward, the vertical space will be emphasized, creating a more open feel.

Cost:  Lighting fixtures can cost $50 to $300; however, there could be additional fees if wiring work is required.

11. Install a Shower Window

Natural light has long been, and continues to be, a must-have in most interior spaces, and the bathroom is no exception. Installing a shower window, whether through an exterior wall or via a ventilated skylight overhead, can instantly transform a bathroom. In addition to letting natural light flow in, windows can help prevent humidity and moisture buildup through natural ventilation. By reducing reliance on a ventilation fan, shower windows can improve energy efficiency and maintain a quiet atmosphere to relax and unwind.

Cost:  Installing a new shower window will cost up to $3,600; whereas, the material cost of a ventilated skylight ranges from $574 to $1,044, with an additional $119 to $216 for labor costs.

12. Choose Modern Textiles

Fixtures, flooring, and finishes are key to an updated bathroom; however, textiles like rugs, towels, and bath curtains are often overlooked as an integral role in the overall look and feel. Adding plush rugs can quickly transform a cold space into a cozy one. Coupled with fluffy soft towels, your bathroom will quickly feel like a spa retreat. Keeping in line with 2025’s biophilic design trend, incorporate sustainable, high-quality materials like organic cotton, linen, or bamboo. Minimalist patterns or bold geometric shapes are a great way to add your own style through textiles. If texture and pattern are already taking center stage in other areas of your bathroom, or if you’re looking for a pop of color, try a solid in a deep jewel tone like emerald green, sapphire blue, or ruby red to create a dramatic and luxurious feel.

Cost:  You can get a four-piece towel set for around $30 and a 2’ x 3’ plush bath rug for around $40.

13. Install a Hidden Tank Toilet

Hidden toilet tanks, sometimes called concealed cisterns, are a great addition to the minimalistic and modern bathroom. Not only do they look good, they also offer some not as often considered, but much-desired benefits. They take up less space, the cistern and plumbing are concealed behind the wall, and the flush button isn't required to be physically located on the toilet itself. These factors can greatly help those with limited mobility as there is more space to maneuver, less to clean, and the flush button can be located in a more easily accessible location. Another benefit is that this trend is currently popular with buyers. If you’re planning to list your home in the near term, this may be a good choice!

Cost:  A wall hung hidden toilet will range between $500 and $1,900 depending on factors like brand, toilet features, and amount of plumbing rework required.

14. Opt for Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring is a no-brainer when it comes to updating your bathroom floor. It checks all the boxes being water resistant, comfortable, durable, easy to maintain, and less expensive than other options. You can achieve your perfect look as there are many options, including the appearance of natural wood, natural stone, and cement finishes. If that isn't enough to convince you, consider the fact that most vinyl can be recycled up to 6 or 7 times, and with a product life of 100 years, recycled vinyl has the potential to last up to 600 years!

Cost: It will cost $3 to $16 per square foot (a total of $120 to $960 for a typical bathroom of 40 - 60 square feet) to install luxury vinyl flooring.

15. Install a Stylish Mirror

Curves are a top interior design trend this year, and for good reason, as pointed out by Kahana: “Curved mirrors, arched doorways, and rounded vanities are replacing sharp, angular designs. These organic shapes create a more calming atmosphere. It makes the bathroom feel more spa-like and inviting.” If you have the space, opt for a larger mirror to help enhance natural light and create a sense of space.

Cost: On average, installing a new mirror will range from $110 to $240.

16. Install a Walk-in Shower

Walk-in showers are expected to take center stage in 2025. They offer a plethora of benefits and also include choices like prefabricated showers as cheaper and faster options. According to Nacopoulos, “our population is aging, and many Boomers plan to age in place (more than half have no plans to move in the future) a walk-in bathtub is more accessible.” Whether or not you have plans to age in place, a walk-in shower is a win, as “Showers with no thresholds are not only sleek and modern but also practical. They’re easier to clean and great for accessibility” says Jodi Peterman, CEO at Elizabeth Erin Designs.

Cost:  Prefabricated shower stalls cost $3,500 to $8,500, while custom showers range from $8,000 to $15,000.

17. Try Wallpaper

Wallpaper has made a comeback in recent years, opening the door for homeowners to add statement wallpapers to their bathroom backdrop. Experts recommend choosing a solid-sheet vinyl, vinyl, or vinyl-coated wallpaper for moisture resistance and choosing a pattern that reflects your personal style while complementing the existing elements of the space. If you want to stand out with your own custom pattern, consider working with an interior designer that uses digital printing to take wallpaper to the next level. Keep in mind the bigger and bolder the statement, the more neutral and subdued the rest of the room should be so as not to overwhelm.

Cost: Hanging wallpaper in a bathroom will cost between $650 - $1,200. If you’re selecting a premium or custom design, you can expect added costs.

18. Repaint With Whites or Warm Neutrals

Freshen up dated, faded, or scuffed bathroom walls with whites or warm neutrals. Nearly half of experts cite warm neutrals as a top trend this year, and this quick bathroom remodel is a sure way to create a clean and fresh look. Whites are considered to add the most value to a home, and once done, you will be left with a blank canvas to incorporate other, design features without creating a noisy or cluttered aesthetic.

Cost:  On average, it costs between $200 and $500 to paint a bathroom.

19. Incorporate an Accent Wall

Accent walls of the past, covered in a single color, may not be as popular as before; however, their modern counterpart remains steadfast in helping to create a chic bathroom feel. Instead of selecting a complementary color for a single wall in your bathroom, Hall advises to “Think of accent walls created from 3D-printed or carved tile adding depth. More than simply a backsplash, this technique quickly transforms a basic bathroom into a work of beauty.” This year’s accent walls will include materials like wood, stone, tile, or textured wallpaper to add warmth and lend to a Zen minimalist environment.

Cost: Costs will vary depending on the size and complexity of the design, but will typically be between $800 and $1,200 for an 8 foot x 10 foot wall with a simple design.

20. Add Soft Lighting

If your bathroom is multi-use, including different levels of light is important. Bright light is needed for some tasks, but in general, adding soft lighting into the mix will help reduce harsh shadows and provide a more relaxing and calming glow. Peterman agrees with the need for proper lighting saying “Good lighting changes everything. Dimmable chandeliers, under-cabinet LED strips, and backlit mirrors let you adjust the vibe from functional to relaxing in seconds.” Having lights operate independently of one another and installing dimmer switches can help to achieve the perfect level of light depending on the time of day and task at hand.

Cost: The cost to install a manual dimmer switch is $75 to $100, with $10 to $25 of the final cost for the dimmer switch itself.

21. Add Some Interest With Textured Tiles

This year, Peterman says, “It’s all about textures—fluted tiles, rough stone sinks, ribbed glass. These details add depth and make the space feel interesting and inviting.” Adding textured tiles to your shower’s recessed shelf or using them on your bathroom’s accent wall are great ways to add dimension to your space. If you want to keep a neutral palette, they might be a good choice, as Kahana points out “They add layers of depth without relying on bold colors or patterns.” If you’re having trouble deciding which pattern to go with, consider an undulating tile that will recreate the feeling of ocean waves and create a tranquil atmosphere.

Cost: On average, tile installation ranges from $4.25 to $110 per square foot and is dependent on the material and style selected.

22. Invest in Natural Stone Countertop

Natural stone is a great way to enhance both your bathroom and your well-being. Natural stones with warm shades like travertine are known to spark creativity and increase relaxation. Cooler shades, like those found in marble, help evoke a calming sensation. The top natural stone choices for bathrooms are quartz, granite, and marble. Each is moisture-resistant, durable, and provides a luxury feel. Marble requires the most care, while granite and quartz are known to be a bit more durable. Ultimately, personal preference and typical bathroom use can help determine the best stone type for your space.

Cost: The average cost runs between $40 and  $200 per square foot and is dependent on the type, color, and finish of stone as well as size, complexity, and where it was sourced from.

23. Opt for Large Tiles

Large tiles offer many benefits, and since “People are leaning toward large-format tiles with fewer grout lines, especially in bathrooms and kitchen backsplashes, for a cleaner, more expansive look.” per Perdomo, 2025 may be the perfect time to install them during your bathroom remodel. They have a modern look, work well for both floors and walls, and can make spaces appear larger than they are. With fewer grout lines to attend to, cleaning and maintenance become simpler, allowing you more time to enjoy your bathroom oasis!

Cost: On average, large format ceramic tiles cost between $18 and $40 a square foot for installation.

24. Follow Tile-Drenching Trend

Image credit: Nemo Tile + Stone

Color-drenching will take the spotlight in 2025 according to 55% of designers who agree it is the top trend. This includes Kahana, who says:  “We’re seeing entire bathrooms—walls, floors, and ceilings—covered in the same tile. This is a bold look that can really make the space feel bigger and more luxurious. It creates a look that is clean and high-end.” To incorporate this trend into your own bathroom, install the same tiles throughout and extend the look by painting the ceiling and trim in a matching color.

Cost: Tile material and style, along with bathroom size, and accessibility will be factors in the cost of tile-drenching. Tile installation ranges from $4.25 to $110 per square foot.

25. Incorporate Smart Tech

Smart tech is all the rage in all areas of our lives, and the bathroom is no different. It has the ability to improve energy efficiency, allow for customized and personalized control, and make our lives easier if applied properly. Kahana is quick to point out that “there are now plenty of ways you can integrate tech that feels more natural and improves the experience for homeowners. You can add smart mirrors that adjust the lighting throughout the day, heated floors that learn your schedule, and showers that remember your perfect water temperature.” If you can’t replace all areas at once, Cornforth points out the practicality of motion-activated faucets:  “They will always be clean since you don’t need to touch them, and their minimalistic look together with conserving water and reducing the spread of germs is a great way to combine style and mindfulness.”

Cost:  Smart technology can be installed in your bathroom for $1,700 to $8,500, depending on the features chosen.

Bathroom Upgrades for Any Budget

The above tips are perfect for anyone preparing to sell their home or simply wanting to upgrade the look and feel of their bathroom. If you’re starting small, options like freshening your paint color with whites or warm neutrals, incorporating soft light, or upgrading your cabinet hardware are fast and low-cost ways to make an impression. If the budget is bigger, tile-drenching your space, adding in-floor heating, and installing floating fixtures with smart features will be sure to transform your space into the place of your dreams. If you’re not sure how to start, head to the bathroom and start by visualizing how even one of these tips might improve your space!

FAQ

What is a realistic budget for a bathroom remodel?
On average, $12,000 is a realistic budget to set for remodeling your bathroom. This would include replacing the tub/shower, toilet, and bathroom vanity, redoing the flooring and walls, and updating plumbing and electrical fixtures. Of course, there are many factors that need to be considered, such as the size of the bathroom, the complexity of the remodel, and the materials used. While most homeowners pay somewhere between $6,000 and $17,000, you could accomplish a more budget-friendly small bathroom remodel for around $2,500 or go all out with a full reno on a large luxury bathroom equipped with the finest materials, fixtures, and more for up to $55,000.

Can I renovate my bathroom for $5000?

For a smaller bathroom, $2,500 can cover the costs of a remodel. While you may not be able to install the latest fixtures and incorporate all the trends, there is plenty you can do to improve the look, feel, and function while staying on budget. Painting is a quick way to freshen the space and can be done in this year’s top colors to bring your bathroom up to date. Paint can be added to walls, cabinets, and even tiles if they’re the right type. Upgrading faucets, hardware, and your shower head are also simple and economical ways to enhance your bathroom. If there is money left over, consider including one or two “smart” devices in your upgrades for an even better experience!

When remodeling a bathroom, what comes first?

To begin, decide on an overall design plan. For bathroom remodels that require extensive plumbing or electrical work, knowing which walls or areas of the floor need to be opened for access is important. Focus next on creating the access areas and removing any existing fixtures or flooring that is being replaced. Once you’ve removed everything, it’s time to begin rebuilding. Adding plumbing, electric, and any in-floor heating will be done first while access is available. Next, flooring can be installed to provide a solid base to continue. Walls are then painted or tiled, followed by the installation of toilets, showers/tubs, and vanities. Smaller items like light fixtures, faucets, and accessories come next, and the final electric and plumbing work can be completed. To finish, bring in some of your favorite fluffy towels and soft carpets and begin relaxing!
