Published Nov 28, 2022
Color plays a huge role in our lives and the overall design of our homes. You can use color to brighten spaces, change the mood, make rooms feel bigger or cozier, and reflect your personality. With all the power that color holds in home design, Fixr.com annually releases this report on paint and color trends to give homeowners the lowdown on whats fresh, popular, and on-trend each year.
We have asked 62 top interior design industry experts to give us their opinions on what are going to be the biggest color trends in 2023. These include not only things like the color of the year, but also what industry experts are seeing and experiencing in their work each day. These include palettes, individual color choices, wallpaper trends, how people will be incorporating new colors into their homes, and what colors will be best for resale. The result is a comprehensive look at the colors that will be showing up in homes in 2023 and beyond, and the best way to capture these popular looks.

Neutrals with pops of bold color is thought to be the most popular color palette for 2023, according to 58% of experts. This palette ranked third last year, just behind warm neutrals and earthy tones, which have dropped slightly in popularity this year.
Neutrals have long been considered the safe choice for homes, whether you went with warm or cool tones. But homeowners are getting bolder, and the color choices they are making for accents and for secondary palettes are getting bolder, too. As Anna Gibson, AKG Design Studio, points out one of the most popular trends we will see is colors! We are moving away from gray and white in the wide world of colors. By using neutrals as the backdrop of the space, it gives you a safe way to splash out and experiment with some of the bold new colors that are showing up this year. For anyone that has always wanted to go a little richer in tone, but who has hesitated to do so, a neutral palette with a pop of bold color is the perfect solution. Lisa Ciofani Basham, from Helpful Home Staging & Design, agrees by saying, Soothing, soft warm colors will wrap the main living spaces so you can enjoy your lifestyle with accent colors of your choice.
Earth tones and warm neutrals were the stand out winners last year as people were looking for more earthy-natural palettes, and these are remaining strong this year too, with 48% and 37% choosing them as the most sought-after palettes in 2023, respectively. These palettes have a lot of staying power, so theyre a good choice to make as well for anyone that doesnt want to update again soon. Rounding out the list of the top five are rich jewel tones (26%) and dark colors (24%) - both of which are beginning to show up frequently in 2023 for colors of the year and anticipated accents. Cool neutrals were a top choice only three years ago, but now these deeper, richer tones are gaining more popularity. Theyre also proving more popular than classic shades like black and white and gray, so these colors may be ones to look out for.
2023 is ready for deep, saturated colors that are balanced with neutrals. We will be using colors that empower this next season.

The most popular color for 2023, chosen by 50% of surveyed experts, will be Terracotta - a rich, red-brown color that is reminiscent of Southwestern designs and iron-rich clay.
Tied for second place is the color clay, creamy white and deep, pewter green, all of which received 40% of experts votes for it to be one the top color choices. The color clay is often a cool, gray-toned neutral, although some brands may incorporate some shades that get closer to tan. Creamy white also a neutral, but a warmer one that would blend beautifully with terracotta, either as a trim color or as the main color of the room using terracotta as the accent.
The remaining color that makes up the top five is indigo (37%), a deep and rich, nature-inspired color. Like deep, pewter green, it is much more saturated than other popular shades of blues and greens from the last few years. While a light sage green can be a nearly neutral backdrop, these colors have a bigger presence in the home, and help homeowners make a bigger statement with their walls.
Interestingly, most of these top colors can be combined in varying ways to create palettes that would work well with this years trends.
Other colors to note include earthy orange - a shade fairly close to terracotta, ochre, peacock, sage green, and dark charcoal gray. All of these shades are nodding toward the trend of blending warm neutrals and earth tones with some bolder colors as accents. Many of these shades can work beautifully with one another or will stand well on their own for those wanting to use just one color in the room.

2023s Colors of the Year look very different from the ones popular brands selected in 2022. While last year shades of green dominated the industry, this year the colors are much more diverse, as well as richer and more vibrant. This year sees just one shade of green - Vining Ivy selected by both PPG and its sister company Glidden. It also includes a creamy white - Behrs Blank Canvas - some cool and warm neutrals - Ivory Brown by Valspar and Rustic Greige by Dutch Boy, as well as some more daring colors. These bolder shades start with the saturated Redend Point that looks like a softer version of terracotta, and moves into the much richer Terra Rosa from Dunn Edwards and Raspberry Blush from Benjamin Moore.
One of the nice things about the various colors of the year for 2023 is that so many of them can be used with one another. Whether you choose one of the more neutral shades and go bold with an accent, or you make one of the bolder choices the main color of the room and pair it with Blank Canvas or Rustic Greige on the trim, these colors can all be used to help create that quickly rising color palette of neutrals with pops of color that is predicted to be popular this year.
Benjamin Moores color of the year Raspberry Blush is the perfect example of a color that inspires. We are spending more time at home. Our home environment should connect to us on a level that engages us.

Whether they think it will simply maintain its popularity or grow to new heights, 96% of experts feel that wallpaper will continue to be a big trend in 2023. Of these, 63% also believe that its going to be even more popular than before. This is big, as wallpaper has been trending high for the last few years already. It shows no signs of slowing down in its growth, which can be reassuring to homeowners who may want to give it a try; its not likely to go out of style or make your home look dated any time soon. So even those that may be late to embrace this wallcovering can still get in on the trend and capture some of its vibrancy and appeal for themselves.

Botanical-patterned wallpapers are the top choice of experts, with more than 50% of them believing this will be the most popular. Botanical prints and art in general is designed to faithfully represent an image of a plant - usually identifiable. For wallpaper, this can mean a wide range of different things, from prints with oversized leaves to delicate prints of flowering plants. This type of pattern goes well with some other recurring themes of nature and nature-inspired designs being seen in many homes.
Following botanical prints, murals were selected as the next most popular by 42%. Murals are an appealing way to use wallpaper to make a statement or an accent wall. They can incorporate botanical, floral, or other trending designs, or be something personal to the user. Floral wallpapers are also a popular choice, according to 40% of experts. What separates these from botanical prints is that the flowers dominate the image, rather than the plant itself.
Rounding out the top five popular designs includes art deco (31%) and chinoiserie designs (24%) - both designs that are showing up in other areas as well. Art deco designs are rich and decadent, featuring metallic hues, bold and dark colors, and lots of repeating geometric designs.
Updated for 2023, these patterns are bold, but they still have a sense of formality and tradition to them, which makes them feel like a safer choice for someone wanting to incorporate something new into their home. Chinoiserie also has a formal and almost fantastical air to it; its another way you can embrace something different, without feeling like youre going too far from your roots. Both art deco and chinoiserie can include some of the popular colors of 2023, and chinoiserie can also include many botanical and floral images in the design as well, letting you capture more than one trend at a time.

When it comes to introducing new colors into the home in 2023, most experts (57%) recommend that you simply paint the whole room a new color. Doing this can have the biggest impact on a space, changing the way that it looks and feels.
Following right behind this trend is using new colors in textiles, of which 44% of experts said would be most popular. This can be a way to incorporate more than one color into a home, or a way to incorporate some bolder shades if you dont want to commit to them on the wall. Wallpapering the entire room rounds out the top three choices with 36% of industry professionals believing it would be how most homeowners will opt to introduce a new color. Given the popularity of wallpaper, this makes sense; if you find a print or pattern that you love, covering the entire room will have a similar effect to painting it.
Experts also agree that furniture (34%) and wallpapering an accent wall (32%) are also great ways to include new color in a design. Both of these options can be an interesting way to introduce something bold to the room. A brightly colored furniture piece or a bold, bright wallpaper on an accent wall can quickly draw the eye, letting them take center stage in the room.
Finally, 24% of experts like the idea of introducing color by painting the ceiling. Ceilings are becoming a new and more popular way of introducing color, rather than doing so on an accent wall. Painting a ceiling can change the light and color of the whole room. For example, using a shade like terracotta will cast the entire space with a glowing warmth from above.
The ceiling is seldom treated as an accent wall. As interior design creativity continues to be stretched and challenged I think the ceiling will become the element that takes a space from great to spectacular.

If youre wondering where the most popular place to incorporate wallpaper into your home is, an overwhelming 84% of experts agree that the powder room will be at the top of most peoples list. Powder rooms are often more formal than other bathrooms. Theyre also more likely to be seen by guests, but not used as often by the family. This means that youre less likely to get tired of a pattern quickly, while it lets you show off something special to visitors.
Other spaces that experts believe homeowners will want to incorporate wallpaper include the bedroom (47%), dining room (44%), ceiling (26%), and the entryway (23%). Bedrooms are a nice choice for wallpaper because this is a personal space; choose a print or pattern that represents your personal taste for comfort, creating an atmosphere tailored for what relaxes you the most. Dining rooms, though, like powder rooms are often more formal spaces. It can make sense to want to splash out on something a little fancier or more dramatic in this room. Entryways also fit the same bill; its the first space seen by guests, so you may want to make an impression.
Wallpapering the ceiling, like painting it, is also quickly becoming a popular trend. There are wallpapers made just for ceilings that can mimic the look of a tin-ceiling for a lot less money. Or consider using a repeating, geometric, or bold pattern on the ceiling to add some interest to a room that may not have the wall space to incorporate something like this. Rooms with oversized windows or lots of wall art can often make better use of the ceiling for accents.

If youre planning on selling a home, 82% of experts feel that warm neutrals are the best choice for interiors. Warm neutrals have been the overall favorite color palette for interiors in 2022. Warm neutrals are often seen as a fresh canvas, and considered as both welcoming and safe color options. While some people may not love them, they are rarely turned off by them entirely. Its for this reason that while neutrals with bold colors are trending, its still not being recommended for those that are selling soon. A personal color preference that speaks to you may not speak to everyone.
Following warm neutrals, white is the next most recommended color by 61% of experts. White is often considered light, neutral, and clean. It makes a blank slate for the people moving in to put their own stamp on. It also works well in any space - dark spaces or small spaces can feel bigger and brighter with white paint. Cool neutrals are also recommended by 32% of experts for similar reasons; these colors look good in small or dark homes, which can make these types of homes easier to sell.
While deep colors are beginning to trend this year, only 2% of experts feel you should use them if you plan on selling soon. This could change as dark or rich colors grow in popularity, but for now its best to use them only in homes you plan on staying in yourself.
For a year round canvas for seasonal change throughout the year, select a creamy white and warm neutral colors will be your best bet for paint (especially if you are selling your home)

White has remained the most popular exterior color for selling a home for the last few years, and continues to dominate into 2023. When asked which exterior colors they most recommend, 74% of top experts agree that white is the color to choose. A fresh coat of white paint can make a home look clean and fresh. It also lets you use a lot of different colors for shutters, trim, and the front door, so you can personalize it to highlight and show off your homes best features.
Natural wood stains and tan have also both increased in popularity this year as well, with 42% and 39% of experts recommending them respectively. Natural wood stains are also becoming popular for some areas inside the home as people choose to show off the natural grain and beauty of real wood.
Tan, followed by cream (37%) and gray (23%), are also good neutral tones that can work well on an exterior. This can vary depending on where the home is located; tan may be a better choice in some Southern states where darker colors are more popular, while cream will be more popular in the Midwest, and gray can be found along the Eastern coast. All of these shades also work well with several different trim and front door colors. This can mean that the new homeowners can still personalize a space, without feeling like they need to repaint right away, helping a home sell faster.
